Country overview

Mexico operates under a U.S. State Department Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory overall, with six states — Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas — at Level 4: Do Not Travel due to cartel violence, kidnapping, and terrorism.

The security environment is shaped by active succession conflicts within the CJNG following the killing of its founder and by the ongoing internal war within the Sinaloa Cartel, both of which generate volatility across multiple regions.

The population's sense of insecurity remains high, and disappearances continue to rise even as registered homicide figures show some decline.
