City threat summary

Mexico City carries a U.S. State Department Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) advisory, with cited risks including crime and kidnapping; the UK FCDO similarly warns that terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out and that political demonstrations — which are frequent in the capital and can turn confrontational — pose a civil unrest risk to bystanders.

The primary street-level threat in Mexico City is elevated petty and opportunistic crime, particularly theft, with kidnapping concerns also noted by multiple governments.

High-impact organized crime violence, while present nationally, is assessed at a lower intensity in the capital relative to other parts of Mexico.

Country overview

Mexico operates under a U.S. State Department Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory overall, with six states — Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas — at Level 4: Do Not Travel due to cartel violence, kidnapping, and terrorism.

The security environment is shaped by active succession conflicts within the CJNG following the killing of its founder and by the ongoing internal war within the Sinaloa Cartel, both of which generate volatility across multiple regions.

The population's sense of insecurity remains high, and disappearances continue to rise even as registered homicide figures show some decline.
