City threat summary

Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport operates under ASTORISK threat level 5-CRITICAL due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with the FCDO advising against all travel to Russia citing high likelihood of terrorist attacks and the US State Department maintaining a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory.

Recent drone attacks in February and April 2026 resulted in multiple temporary airport closures, while Russian aviation authorities have implemented rolling flight restrictions due to unmanned aerial vehicle threats throughout 2026.

Country overview

Russia carries a universal Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and virtually all major Western governments, a posture that has remained stable throughout 2026.

The country is engaged in an ongoing armed conflict with Ukraine, with border regions including Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk subject to active drone and missile strikes; Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil infrastructure have produced fuel shortages and elevated transportation costs across the country.

The overall threat environment is compounded by a high terrorism risk acknowledged by Russia's own FSB, severe restrictions on civil liberties and political activity, and the near-total absence of Western consular and financial support for foreign nationals inside the country.
